On 01.01.2012, ACD was entered in the MDBA breed register as a breed under development. Since then, it has spread all over the world, Australia, the USA, Europe and is constantly increasing in prevalence. MDBA Maintains strict control of breeders of ACD and only registers offspring of ACD that follow the guidelines that have been set up.
Australian Cobberdog has been developed over many years with approved infusions of e.g. Retriever, English Cocker, American Cocker, Irish Water Spaniel, Poodle, and Water Dog.
The goal is always to bring out the best mood, top health and an allergy-friendly coat.
This is work that takes time and we are constantly gaining access to new genetic tests that can define our breed, where we can develop breeding towards a common standard. One challenge is that you must not proceed too quickly, as it is important that health challenges are taken seriously, and you only breed further on lines that bring us closer to the goal.
Temperament is an important characteristic of ACD and the drive towards everyone looking the same must not come at the expense of this.
In Norway, we are at the forefront and the breeding animals from Kennel Nor v/DHH and our fellow breeders are among the best in the world. Through the cooperation we have in Scandinavia, we have obtained many good lines and the degree of inbreeding is very low.
When it goes from a breed under development to an approved breed in the FCI is difficult to say, but the process is already underway, but it is also important that this does not go faster than good breeding work is done at all stages.
All dogs that are considered for breeding must be X-rayed for HD/AD, Eye scan, Genetic tests for known diseases, and Mini also has a Patella test. The dogs must be safe, social, healthy and pleasant before they are considered for use in breeding, and this is carefully assessed by each individual breeder.
Dogs have a language, and we should be happy about that. When the dog growls, he/she is trying to tell you adults that he/she is not comfortable or safe with the situation. Then he gives you the opportunity to secure the situation
The fact that the dog is growling gives you the opportunity to make sure that nothing dangerous happens. As the dog gets older, and gains experience with what is dangerous and what is not, growling becomes more accurate. Children are often scary for young dogs, but eventually they distinguish between children who have reason to be afraid and those who do not need to be afraid. Growling is a good friend, and a warning to us adults that we must be careful.
As of today, it is rare that one needs to pluck the ears, but if hair grows in the ears which creates some more wax in the ears, this must be carefully plucked/picked out, and the ears cleaned and dried regularly.
Some vets have understood that you should not pick out hair and this is not true as there are greater chances of earwax and fungus with a lot of hair in the ears which creates more moisture.
Malassezia is part of the normal flora in the skin and ears. Sometimes this yeast can multiply heavily and cause yeast infection problems.
Dogs with drooping ears, and those that like to bathe and get a lot of moisture in their ears are more prone to ear infections. Ears must be checked often, it should not smell. Also dry the ears when the dog has been outside in rainy weather, also check the ears if it has been very hot and humid.
Fortunately, HD is not a widespread problem for Cobberdogs
The development of HD in a dog is due to a combination of heredity and environment. Heritability expresses how much of the total variation in a trait is due to hereditary factors. Heritability is that difference between individuals due to heredity; Heritability is not the same as heredity. The heritability of HD varies somewhat from breed to breed, and surveys from the National Institute of Health and Welfare show an average heritability of just under 30% (variation from 10-48%). This means that other factors are also of great importance for the development of the defect. However, it is assumed that a dog does not develop HD unless there is a hereditary predisposition, but a dog need not develop HD despite the fact that it may be genetically predisposed.
HD develops as the dog grows. A dog that has developed HD can have problems of varying degrees, but not always. Whether it will develop clinical symptoms is primarily dependent on the degree of HD, but also to a significant extent on the dog's entire structure and function, i.e. whether the dog is healthy and can move correctly and efficiently. Dogs with a poor and unhealthy structure will often have greater problems if they have HD compared to a well-constructed dog that can move healthily and efficiently. Correct exercise is important! A dog with a mild degree of HD will usually not show any symptoms at all, and will be able to live a completely normal life.
There are hundreds of reasons why dogs itch: Insect bites, wet eczema, tangles in the fur, wrong diet, stress, boredom, allergies, toothache, earache, lice, fleas, ticks, just to name a few.
Diet/Environment is seen as the biggest factor that can cause itching/fur problems.
When the vet doesn't know what's wrong with the dog, it happens that they think it should be investigated for allergies, lots of tests, sent to Germany, come back with no good answer, just as far, much poorer.
What most people get as an answer is an allergy to house dust mites and flea saliva, and then you should think about how you feel at home, where the dog is, do you have a lot of carpets, are you good at airing, etc.
Are there certain proteins that dogs have difficulty digesting?
Yes, some dogs unfortunately have problems with too much protein and vegetable proteins, from grain, wheat, soy, corn or other.
All puppies scratch their teeth and they are used to playing quite hard with their siblings.
If there are small children in the family, then it is good to teach the children not to wave their arms and howl if the puppy gets a little eager and not to yell at the puppy, but to die. Never leave small children alone with the puppy, as both child and puppy are unpredictable in their jumps and bounces.
Choice of gender: There are pluses and minuses with both sexes, but when "everyone" thinks that girls are easier to deal with, then there is a truth with modifications...
It can probably be true of guard dogs and hunting dogs, breeds that have been bred for special characteristics and were not originally bred as family dogs.
If you've visited us, you've met a bunch of boys and that doesn't happen at any other kennels. Mostly they keep the guys apart and they never meet..
With us, they live together, eat together and play freely together
the girls and boys are of course super nice, have their own personalities. some are very soft and feel best in the arms of mum/dad and are happy with the three walks a day, others are more active and willing to exercise and are fun to train with.
I like to compare the four-legged ones with the two-legged ones as I believe that boys are more patient with children, they tolerate more and do not have a period, with associated hormonal fluctuations, so I recommend boys to those with children and little experience with puppies..
You get a nice monster in your house and that takes its toll..))
It can of course happen that you meet an unsocial Cobberdog, but this is most often due to the dog not having the socialization and environmental training it needs, but it is not often that you meet such.
You get a good starting point from us and then it is up to you whether you get a well-balanced adult dog. Good upbringing, common sense and a lot of patience are needed... and regardless of whether you have had a dog before, all the information from us should be read and the course recommended to everyone with a new puppy in the house.
There are many who hold dog classes, so call around to the ones near you.
We send out a lot of information during the process and this is something you MUST familiarize yourself with in order to have a good dog life.
It is almost impossible for a breeder to pick up that "so-and-so" should not have had a dog, and we must assume that adult, healthy people know how to familiarize themselves with dog ownership before acquiring a living being.
If you have problems early on and can't "get it done", we are helpful if you get in touch and we also offer the return of the dog if you have taken water over your head, but then it is important that you don't wait too long.. That is allowed to throw in the towel, we accept.
It is often the case that the established dog community tends to forget that all dogs originate from the wolf and that all breeds are man-made.
Our breeding program aims to breed good family dogs that are social, happy and easily trained
You can find rescue dogs, therapy dogs, visiting dogs and you can train them for whatever you want to train an Australian Cobberdog for as they are smart and easy to learn.
